This made the story I had tried to disentangle in the first edition come to life to growing numbers of researchers and certain sectors of the non-academic world, from activists for social justice to city mayors and financiers. Further, many researchers have explored various features of the model in many different cities in the world and thereby contributed enormously to advance the research agenda. The actual dynamics captured in the first edition of the book have kept on developing in often amplified and sharpened ways. And as the book continues to be used in classrooms all over the world and by a growing number of doctoral students all over the world, it seemed best to go through the painstaking work of sounding out the framework against the new evidence and against the astounding and rich body of critical work it has engendered or has been associated with. As the book has become part of at least four specific types of debates, ensconced in rather distinct sets of disciplines and spreading over a large number of countries, it became simply impossible to address the issues raised by writing a few articles responding to my critics. My project was to strip the framework I had developed in the first edition from all the empirical materials describing the 1980s and have it confront the 1990s.
